Weekly News Recap for 1/17/2011

Let’s take a look at the latest news from the supplier diversity community. This week there seems to be a lot to talk about.

  • Philadelphia is taking serious action against two area firms for misrepresentation as a minority-owned firm. One contractor was levied a large fine and prohibited from doing work with the city for three years. (via CBS Philly)
  • The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center’s Office of Minority Business Development is sponsoring a Premier Development Program for MBEs. The year-long program offers a variety of training sessions with dynamic skills. (via Athens Banner-Herald)
  • After a great deal of urging from city officials and area businesses, more Memphis-area MBEs are getting involved with a $100 million Electrolux project. (via WMCTV)
  • Chicago welcomes the launch of a group discounting service exclusively offering coupons for black-owned businesses and services. (via Chicago Sun-Times)
  • NCAIED has released its complete list of honorees for its 2012 Reservation Economic Summit (RES) event next month in Las Vegas. (via Indian Country Today Media Network)
  • Despite their ranks growing, three out of four women business owners fear that the economy will negatively impact their business in 2012. (via Portfolio.com)
  • 5 Black-Owned Businesses Making a Buzz (via The Street)
  • Over the past five years, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has now awarded a record $1 billion in contracts to M/WBEs. (via Crain’s New York)
